With all the construction happening along Northwest Highway, we wanted to send you a friendly reminder that in construction zones, cell phone use is prohibited and you will get an expensive ticket. Several sources have stated that Arlington Heights Police are watching!

Also, under state law, cell phone use without a hands-free device is also forbidden in school zones, and anywhere in the city of Chicago. Neither hand-held or hands-free cell phones may be used by novice drivers, a category that includes anyone under the age of 19.

At approximately 9:42am on Monday, Palatine police and fire responded to a report that a 76-year-old woman fell in a sewer hole near Hicks Road and Garden Avenue behind Jewel. The woman called from her cell phone that she had fallen into an open hole. She reported she was about 12 feet down after falling in the hole. Dispatchers used her phone signal as she was talking to plot her location. The woman reported she was on the east side of Hicks Road. It took time for police to locate the victim because she could not give a good description of her location. The woman was wounded and was removed from the hole and transported Northwest Community Hospital. Firefighters requested public works to replace the manhole cover. The development group that owns the property, was reportedly notified Friday of the missing cover but did not order a replacement until Monday after the accident occurred.

A motorist identified as Steven L. Banks 32, of the 1100 block of Boxwood Drive in Mount Prospect, was killed in Palatine Friday morning during a three-car crash.

Palatine Fire Department responded to a report of a car crash involving three vehicles at 5:56am Friday morning at the intersection of Euclid and Quentin in Palatine.

It appears that Banks was the driver of a 2004 Chevy Impala which was traveling westbound on Euclid when it went through a red light and struck a 2001 Chevy AT&T van driven by a 69-year-old male driver that was going southbound on Quentin. The impact sent the Impala into the eastbound lane of Euclid where it struck a 2004 red Saab driven by a 59-year-old Hoffman Estates woman. The other two drivers were not hurt.

Police said all indications at this point in the investigation show that Banks was not wearing a safety belt.
