An 88-year-old Arlington Heights woman reported missing on Tuesday, died today after police discovered her in her car in a Rolling Meadows ditch, authorities said.

Lillian Kauffman, of the 1200 block of West Sunset Dr. in Arlington Heights, was behind the wheel of a red Honda Civic, which police found in a ditch near Interstate 90.

A neighbor of Kauffman’s contacted a family member of hers on Tuesday, and told them she had been acting disoriented and confused. When the family member went to Kauffman’s house after being unable to reach her, the garage door was open and her car gone.

The Rolling Meadows Police Department and Cook County medical examiner’s office are investigating the incident. Investigators do not suspect foul play.

Manikandan Balasubramanian, 33, of Arlington Heights, appeared Wednesday for a bond hearing on felony charges of reckless homicide, aggravated driving under the influence and leaving the scene of a fatal accident. 

Balasubramanian told authorities he arrived at Polekatz Gentleman’s Club, 7337 W. 100th Pl. about 8:20 p.m. A little more than three hours later, he was driving his 2003 Toyota Camry east on 100th when fatally striking 66-year-old Charles Michel, of Hickory Hills.

Balasubramanian was found in his Camry, which was blocking traffic, at 95th Street and Harlem Avenue in Bridgeview shortly after the crash. The car had damage to two of its tires, windshield, a headlight and an exterior side mirror.

Residents are urged to reduce their exposure to mosquitoes when they are most active ~ between dusk and dawn, by wearing insect repellent, and by eliminating areas of standing water where mosquitoes can breed.
